PERSONALITY:
Mary is a big bundle of things that make an inventor and self proclaimed and only slightly proven genius the way they are. For starters, Mary is very childish, something just seemed to stop growing at a certain point and while her body certainly filled out, her brain didn’t exactly follow the same procedure. But it’s that creativeness and childishness that seem to make her such a great inventor, she thinks outside the box. However stupid and silly she may act, Mary is actually very intelligent, crunching numbers is a piece of cake and some math that you’d need to do on paper she can snap through her head in seconds. Mary’s intelligence has been monitored and neglected because of the childish behavior that follows with it until this moment. Along with that childish nature comes a spit fire temper. Mary is impatient and very quick to anger if she’s ever rubbed the wrong way. While this doesn’t happen very often given her aloof nature, when she is cross be prepared for a storm. Mary is more of a getting even sort of person versus a talk it out. This is what makes her so childish and hard to deal with. But when it all boils down, Mary just wants people to like her, she desperately tries to impress people with her inventions and baffle them with logic, but doesn’t ever really realize that people aren’t that interested. Technology is all she knows and she’s to naïve to realize not everyone cares about it as much as she does.
BACKGROUND:
Mother: Annabella Jane Clyde
- Dead. 43. Cyberman
FATHER: Patrick Alan Clyde
- Dead. 49. Heart Attack:
OTHER FAMILY: N/A
HISTORY:
Born into a family that believed aliens were real and that the world was more than they knew, Mary dove into a life that was filled with mystery. Her father, Patrick, was a stay at home dad, he took care of her and was the one who raised her for the most part. Which might have been why she developed such a boyish charm. Her father introduced her to tinkering at a very young age, instantly seeming to pick up things faster than most kids her age and very quickly began to show her parents the result of her intelligence through her vast schooling. Annabella, Mary’s mother, was a member of Torchwood’s Canary Warf complex. She worked in tinkering as well as the man of the house, fixing and rewiring alien technology to use for the advantage of Torchwood. However, the father and the daughter had no idea of their mother and wife’s career. Both of them were sure that Anna was merely a business manager that worked long hours in an office all day. How little they actually knew about their spouse and mother was astonishing. That never made Mary feel less loved by her mother, despite the fact that her mother was always absent for work. There was always the weekend.
The battle of Canary Warf was something that no one could forget, not even Mary forgot what transpired that day. Mary and her father lived around Canary Warf, which made her mother’s commute so much better and during the time of a ghost shift, streets were flooded with the Cybermen. In a ditch effort to save themselves, Patrick took his daughter into an underground cellar in there house where they went seemingly unnoticed for hours. Though Mary’s curiosity to the strange machines that were floating outside got the best of her, and when her father fell asleep with his daughter in his arms, Mary fled to above ground to see Dalek fighting Cybermen from her bedroom window. It wasn’t until her father fetched her from the upper levels, did the Cybermen and Dalek begin to fly from the sky in a rush, suddenly disappearing from the streets of Canary Warf, suddenly gone with no explanation. But that wasn’t the only thing that was gone; something else had been taken without an explanation: Mary’s mother.
As a casualty to the Battle of Canary Warf, Annabella’s mother was never accounted for. The governments denied that it ever happened and put it off to being a hallucination and a terrorist attack. But the pair knew it was more than that. In that battle they had lost a loved one that they would never get back. That didn’t stop Mary, something new sparked in the girl. She grew up learning, building, spending all her time fixing things and making them better. She became an inventor. Her whole life was spent chasing stars and scourging for alien technology like the Cybermen that flooded the streets. The arrival of the 456 and the talking children sparked her interest. She began a blog about the alien technology she had found and the theories she had on alien life. Of course everyone thought she was crazy. But that’s when Torchwood caught sight of her. Picking her out like prey, just like everyone else they seemed to hire.
Usually someone who knows about things first, Torchwood beat her to a crash site she had tracked by maybe hacking into a certain telescope. Instead of running off, Mary moved in for the kill, flaunting her knowledge of the device as well as showing off a bit of her smarts to Jack and the crew. When she was hired as Toshiko’s replacement, the new techie began idolizing everything Toshiko worked on, now taking the place as the new tech girl in the hub.
